Although skin cancer can become both painful and fatal, it often begins as
a rather innocuous and painless problem. What may start as a sunspot could
become a severe malignant skin growth, referred to as a melanoma. A benign
mole which has been present for one’s entire life could become cancerous.
Suspicious growths, as well as moles that change over time or begin to
bleed, could become malignant and should be observed and treated.
Some skin cancer or melanoma risk factors are well known, such as
prolonged exposure to the sun. Sometimes normal moles become malignant
without apparent cause or notice. Regardless of the potential risk factors
that you may be exposed to, you need to periodically look for suspicious
looking growths or changes. When these are noticed, you should seek the
advice of a dermatologist or other trained medical professional. If you do
not feel comfortable checking for potential problems yourself, you should
periodically visit the doctor’s office.
When the opinion of a doctor, or more specifically a dermatologist, is
obtained, medical guidelines require that a proper review be conducted,
which could include the taking of a biopsy. It is critical that proper
medical guidelines be followed because the ability to successfully treat
these diseases in their early stages is high. If left untreated, the
results could be disastrous, even fatal.
NOTE:
The symptoms of skin cancer varies from individual to
individual patient. Only your doctor can provide proper diagnosis of
symptoms and whether they are really symptoms of Skin Cancer.
Some common symptoms
of Skin Cancer could include any of the following:
-
Bumps or
lumps under the skin. However a skin cancer misdiagnosis could result if
this symptom was misdiagnosed as pimple, wart, cyst, fat tumor (Lipoma)
or other non-cancer symptoms.
-
Changes in
skin's condition, such as a growth or a sore that does not heal
properly. However a skin cancer misdiagnosis could result if this
symptom was misdiagnosed as skin infection or other non cancer symptoms.
-
Unusual moles that are asymmetrical, have irregular edges, or
non-uniform color.
Not all
changes in the skin are signs of cancer. It is however, important to
consult a doctor if any symptom more than two to three weeks.
