The incidence of breast cancer in North America and Western Europe is 6 to 10 times higher than in Japan and most parts of Asia and Africa.

Members of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons performed almost 43,000 reconstruction surgeries were performed in 1990.  In 1981, 20,000 reconstruction surgeries were performed.  This is an increase of approximately 115%, the reasons for which are largely cosmetic in nature, however, there are many reconstruction surgeries which arise after cancer-related mastectomies.
